What causes left side pain

Posted on April 3, 2026 by Admin

“Left side pain” can mean a lot of different things because several organs sit on the left side of your body. The exact location and type of pain really matter.

🧭 Common causes by area

🔼 Upper left side (below ribs)

  • Gas or bloating – very common, sharp or crampy
  • Stomach issues (indigestion, gastritis)
  • Pancreas problems like Pancreatitis
  • Spleen issues (enlargement or injury)
  • Kidney problems like Kidney stones or infection (pain may go to your back)

🔽 Lower left side (abdomen)

  • Constipation or gas buildup
  • Intestinal conditions like Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Infection or inflammation like Diverticulitis

👩‍⚕️ If female

  • Ovary-related pain (cysts, ovulation)
  • Conditions like Endometriosis

❤️ Chest or upper-left pain (important!)

  • Could be muscle strain or gas
  • But also could be serious like Heart attack

🚨 Get urgent help if you have:

  • Chest pressure or tightness
  • Pain spreading to arm/jaw/back
  • Shortness of breath, sweating, nausea

⚠️ When to see a doctor

  • Pain is severe, persistent, or getting worse
  • Fever, vomiting, or weight loss
  • Pain when urinating or blood in urine
  • You’re unsure and it’s not improving

👍 Quick self-check questions

To narrow it down, think about:

  • Is it sharp, dull, crampy, or burning?
  • Exactly where is it (upper, lower, back, chest)?
  • Does it change with eating, movement, or bathroom use?

If you tell me:

  • Exact spot
  • Type of pain
  • Any other symptoms

I can help you narrow it down much more accurately.
