Lines/ripples in nails

Posted on April 3, 2026 by Admin

Lines or ripples in nails can indicate normal aging, minor trauma, or sometimes an underlying health issue. The exact type of line matters.

🧭 Types of nail lines & ripples

1. Vertical ridges (from cuticle to tip)

  • Most common and often normal, especially with age
  • Can be caused by:
    • Dry nails
    • Mild nutrient deficiencies (iron, B vitamins)
  • Usually harmless if nails are otherwise healthy

2. Horizontal lines (across the nail)

  • Known as Beau’s lines
  • Deep grooves appear when nail growth temporarily stops
  • Causes can include:
    • Severe illness or infection
    • Surgery
    • Physical trauma to the nail
  • They usually grow out over time

3. Pitting or small dents

  • Looks like tiny depressions or ripples
  • Often linked to skin conditions:
    • Psoriasis
    • Eczema

4. Discoloration or white lines

  • Minor trauma is common
  • Could reflect mineral imbalances (rarely serious)

🚨 When to see a doctor

  • Sudden or worsening lines
  • Brittle, discolored, or separating nails
  • Accompanied by fatigue, hair loss, or rashes

👍 Nail care tips

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in protein, iron, zinc, and biotin
  • Keep nails hydrated
  • Avoid biting or harsh manicures
  • Trim regularly to prevent splitting

If you want, you can describe what your nail lines look like, and I can help figure out which type you’re seeing and what it may mean.
