Vinegar and baking soda for shiny floors

Posted on March 9, 2026 by Admin

Using vinegar and baking soda can help clean floors, but they must be used correctly to actually make floors shiny.

How They Work

  • Vinegar – acidic; dissolves mineral deposits, grease, and dull residue.
  • Baking soda – mild abrasive; helps remove stubborn dirt and stains.

⚠️ When mixed together they fizz and neutralize each other, so their cleaning power drops. It’s better to use them separately.

Method for Shiny Floors

1. Sweep or Vacuum

Remove dust and debris first to avoid scratching.

2. Make Vinegar Cleaning Solution

Mix:

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1 gallon warm water

Mop the floor lightly with this solution.

3. Remove Tough Spots

If there are stains:

  • Sprinkle baking soda directly on the spot.
  • Scrub gently with a damp sponge or cloth.

4. Rinse

Mop once more with clean water to remove any residue.

5. Dry for Shine

Use a microfiber mop or cloth to dry the floor and enhance shine.

Floors Safe for Vinegar

Good for:

  • Ceramic tile
  • Vinyl
  • Linoleum
  • Sealed laminate

Avoid vinegar on:

  • Marble
  • Granite
  • Natural stone
  • Unsealed wood

The acid can damage these surfaces.

💡 Extra Shine Tip:
Add a few drops of dish soap or a teaspoon of olive oil to the vinegar solution to help floors look glossier.
