Soak shredded junk mail paper and 2 household items

Posted on April 4, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a simple and practical way to repurpose shredded junk mail paper using just two common household items to make homemade paper pulp. This is great for DIY paper projects, seed starter pots, or crafts.

πŸ“ DIY Paper Pulp from Junk Mail

πŸ› οΈ Materials

  • Shredded junk mail (paper only, no plastic or glossy inserts)
  • Water – to soak and soften the paper
  • Baking soda or white vinegar – helps break down the fibers

πŸ”Ή Instructions

  1. Soak the Paper
    • Place shredded junk mail in a large bowl or bucket.
    • Cover with warm water and let it soak for 1–2 hours until soft.
  2. Add a Household Helper
    • Option A: Baking Soda – 1–2 teaspoons to loosen fibers and neutralize ink.
    • Option B: White Vinegar – 1–2 tablespoons to brighten the paper and soften fibers.
  3. Blend into Pulp
    • Use a hand blender or food processor to blend the soaked paper into a smooth pulp.
    • Add a little extra water if it’s too thick.
  4. Form Sheets or Shapes
    • Pour pulp onto a mesh screen to make sheets, or into molds for seed starter pots.
    • Press out excess water with a sponge or cloth.
  5. Dry
    • Leave to dry for 24–48 hours until firm.
    • Carefully peel off your recycled paper or homemade seed pots.

πŸ’‘ Extra Tips

  • Mix in flower seeds for biodegradable seed paper.
  • Add natural coloring like beet juice, turmeric, or tea.
  • Use old towels or cloths to press water out faster.
