Shepherd’s pie

Posted on January 13, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic, comforting Shepherd’s Pie 🥧 — rich meat filling, savory gravy, and creamy mashed potatoes baked until golden.

Note: Traditional shepherd’s pie uses lamb. If you use beef, it’s technically cottage pie—both are delicious!

🥧 Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2 lb (900 g) potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk or cream
  • Salt & black pepper

Meat Filling

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb (or beef)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme or rosemary
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make mashed potatoes
    • Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (15–20 min).
    • Drain, mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  2. Cook the meat filling
    • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Sauté onion until soft; add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
    • Add ground meat and cook until browned.
    • Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, herbs, salt, and pepper.
    • Pour in broth and simmer 8–10 minutes until thickened.
    • Stir in peas and carrots.
  3. Assemble
    • Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C).
    • Spread meat mixture in a baking dish.
    • Spoon mashed potatoes on top and spread evenly.
    • Use a fork to create ridges for crispy peaks.
  4. Bake
    • Bake 20–25 minutes until bubbling and golden.
    • Broil 2–3 minutes for extra browning (optional).
  5. Serve
    • Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

💡 Tips for the Best Shepherd’s Pie

  • Thick filling prevents a watery pie.
  • Fork ridges = crispy potato top.
  • Cheesy top: Add shredded cheddar or Parmesan to potatoes.
  • Make-ahead friendly: Assemble and refrigerate up to 24 hours before baking.

🌟 Variations

  • Creamy mash: Add sour cream or cream cheese.
  • Rustic style: Leave potato skins on.
  • Vegetable boost: Add mushrooms or corn.
  • Low-carb: Use mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes.

If you want, I can give you a pub-style Shepherd’s Pie, a slow-cooker version, or a crispy-cheese-topped comfort version—just tell me which one you’d like 😊
