Here’s a classic Salisbury Steak recipe—juicy beef patties smothered in a savory onion and mushroom gravy. 🥩🍄


🥩 Salisbury Steak

🧾 Ingredients (4 servings)

For the Patties:

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Patties

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix gently until combined.
  3. Shape into 4 oval patties.

2️⃣ Brown the Patties

  1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a little oil.
  2. Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
  3. Remove patties and set aside.

3️⃣ Make the Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter or heat oil.
  2. Sauté onions and mushrooms until soft and golden.
  3. Sprinkle flour over vegetables and stir for 1–2 minutes to make a roux.
  4. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened.
  6. Season with salt and pepper.

4️⃣ Finish Cooking

  1. Return patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over them.
  2. Simmer 10 minutes on low until patties are cooked through (internal temp 160 °F / 71 °C).

5️⃣ Serve

  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles. Spoon extra gravy on top.

⭐ Tips

  • Don’t overmix the meat to keep patties tender.
  • Mushrooms and onions add extra flavor, but you can omit mushrooms if you like.
  • Leftovers reheat well and taste even better the next day.
