🥔 Classic Croquettes

🛒 Ingredients (makes ~12–15 croquettes)

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (or béchamel sauce for creamy croquettes)
  • 1 cup cooked filling (chicken, beef, ham, or vegetables) finely chopped
  • ½ cup grated cheese (optional)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika or nutmeg (optional)
  • 1–2 tablespoons chopped herbs (parsley, chives)
  • 1–2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Oil for frying

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling
    • In a pan, sauté onion until soft.
    • Add the cooked filling (meat or veggies) and season with salt, pepper, and optional spices.
    • Let cool slightly, then mix with mashed potatoes and cheese (if using).
  2. Shape the croquettes
    • Take small portions of the mixture and roll into cylinders, balls, or oval shapes.
  3. Coat the croquettes
    • Dip each croquette in beaten egg, then roll in breadcrumbs until fully coated.
  4. Cook
    • Frying: Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry croquettes until golden brown on all sides (~3–5 minutes).
    • Baking: Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Place croquettes on a greased tray, brush lightly with oil, and bake for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway.
  5. Serve
    • Serve hot with ketchup, mayonnaise, or a spicy dipping sauce.

  • For a creamier version, use a thick béchamel sauce instead of mashed potatoes.
  • Add cooked bacon, ham, or smoked chicken for extra flavor.
  • Mix in herbs or spices like thyme, oregano, or paprika to customize the taste.
  • Make mini croquettes as bite-sized appetizers for parties.
