Homemade Baked Beans (Oven or Stovetop)
Ingredients
- 2 cans (400 g / 14 oz each) navy beans or pinto beans, drained & rinsed
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ⅓ cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp molasses or brown sugar
- 1 tbsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- Salt & black pepper
- ¾ cup water or stock
Optional but great: bacon bits or diced smoked sausage
Instructions
- Sauté onion in a pan until soft; add garlic for 30 seconds.
- Stir in ketchup, molasses, mustard, Worcestershire, vinegar, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Add beans and water/stock; mix well.
- Simmer uncovered on low 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick
OR
Bake covered at 180°C / 350°F for 45–60 minutes (uncover last 15 min).
Quick Version (from canned beans)
- Heat canned baked beans.
- Stir in a little butter, brown sugar, mustard, and splash of vinegar.
- Add bacon or onion if you like.
Flavor upgrades
- BBQ sauce instead of ketchup
- Maple syrup instead of sugar
- Chili flakes or cayenne for heat
- Smoked paprika or liquid smoke
