🥞 American pancake (American Pancake)

American pancakes are thick, fluffy, and soft breakfast pancakes, usually served stacked with syrup, butter, or fruit. They are different from thinner European-style pancakes like French crêpes.


Ingredients (Makes 8–10 pancakes)

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1¼ cups milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tbsp melted butter or vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

1️⃣ Mix dry ingredients

  • In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

2️⃣ Mix wet ingredients

  • In another bowl, whisk milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla.

3️⃣ Combine

  • Pour wet into dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined.
  • ⚠️ Batter should be slightly lumpy — do not overmix.

4️⃣ Cook pancakes

  • Heat a lightly greased skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  • Pour ¼ cup batter per pancake.
  • Cook 2–3 minutes until bubbles form on top.
  • Flip and cook 1–2 minutes until golden brown.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Stack pancakes and top with maple syrup, fresh fruit, butter, or whipped cream.

Tips & Variations

  • Extra fluffy: Let the batter rest 5–10 minutes before cooking.
  • Add-ins: Blueberries, chocolate chips, or sliced bananas.
  • Buttermilk version: Replace milk with buttermilk for tangier flavor and fluffier texture.
  • Vegan option: Use plant-based milk and a flax egg (1 tbsp flaxseed + 3 tbsp water).
