🥞 American pancake (American Pancake)
American pancakes are thick, fluffy, and soft breakfast pancakes, usually served stacked with syrup, butter, or fruit. They are different from thinner European-style pancakes like French crêpes.
Ingredients (Makes 8–10 pancakes)
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1¼ cups milk
- 1 large egg
- 3 tbsp melted butter or vegetable oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
1️⃣ Mix dry ingredients
- In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
2️⃣ Mix wet ingredients
- In another bowl, whisk milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla.
3️⃣ Combine
- Pour wet into dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined.
- ⚠️ Batter should be slightly lumpy — do not overmix.
4️⃣ Cook pancakes
- Heat a lightly greased skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Pour ¼ cup batter per pancake.
- Cook 2–3 minutes until bubbles form on top.
- Flip and cook 1–2 minutes until golden brown.
5️⃣ Serve
- Stack pancakes and top with maple syrup, fresh fruit, butter, or whipped cream.
Tips & Variations
- Extra fluffy: Let the batter rest 5–10 minutes before cooking.
- Add-ins: Blueberries, chocolate chips, or sliced bananas.
- Buttermilk version: Replace milk with buttermilk for tangier flavor and fluffier texture.
- Vegan option: Use plant-based milk and a flax egg (1 tbsp flaxseed + 3 tbsp water).
