Steak and onions

Posted on March 3, 2026 by Admin

Steak and onions is a simple, hearty dish made by pan-searing steak and topping it with deeply caramelized onions. It’s rich, savory, and packed with flavor.

🥩 Best Cuts for Steak & Onions

  • Ribeye – Juicy and flavorful
  • Sirloin – Leaner but tender
  • New York strip – Firm texture, beefy flavor
  • Flank steak – Great sliced thin against the grain

🧅 How to Make It

Ingredients

  • 1–2 steaks (about 1 inch thick)
  • 2 large onions (yellow or sweet), sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Optional: garlic, thyme, splash of balsamic vinegar

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions:
    • Heat 1 tbsp butter/oil in a skillet over medium-low heat.
    • Add sliced onions with a pinch of salt.
    • Cook slowly 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deep golden brown.
    • Remove and set aside.
  2. Cook the steak:
    • Pat steak dry and season generously with salt and pepper.
    • Heat skillet to high. Add remaining butter/oil.
    • Sear steak 3–5 minutes per side (depending on thickness and desired doneness).
  3. Finish:
    • Rest steak 5–10 minutes.
    • Top with caramelized onions and serve.
