Basic Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- Salt & black pepper, to taste
- Optional: pinch of sugar or red pepper flakes
Instructions
- Sauté
Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
Add onion and cook 4–5 minutes until soft.
Add garlic and cook 30 seconds. - Simmer
Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. - Cook
Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. - Finish
Taste and adjust seasoning. Add sugar if needed.
Variations
- Marinara: add fresh basil at the end
- Creamy: stir in a splash of cream
- Meaty: brown ground beef or sausage first
- Smooth: blend with an immersion blender
