Here’s a classic soft sugar cookie recipe—simple, buttery, and perfect for decorating or enjoying plain 🍪✨

Classic Sugar Cookies

Ingredients (makes about 24 cookies)

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven
    • 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients
    • In a bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cream butter & sugar
    • Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
    • Add egg and vanilla; mix until combined.
  4. Combine
    • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing just until dough forms.
  5. Shape cookies
    • Roll dough into 1-inch balls.
    • Roll in sugar if desired.
    • Place 2 inches apart on baking sheets and gently flatten.
  6. Bake
    • Bake 8–10 minutes, until edges are just set (centers will look soft).
  7. Cool
    • Let cookies cool on the pan 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Tips & Variations

  • Cut-out cookies: Chill dough 1 hour, roll out, cut shapes, bake 8–9 minutes.
  • Extra soft: Slightly underbake and cool completely.
  • Flavor boost: Add almond extract or lemon zest.
  • Frosted: Top with buttercream or royal icing once cooled.
