Southern Shrimp Boi

Posted on March 24, 2026 by Admin

Sounds like you’re going for a Southern shrimp po’ boy (sometimes people say “boi”)—a famous sandwich from New Orleans. It’s crispy fried shrimp, tangy sauce, and fresh toppings stuffed into soft bread. Here’s a solid homemade version:

🥖 Southern Shrimp Po’ Boy

Ingredients

For the shrimp

  • 500g shrimp (peeled & deveined)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • ½ cup flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • Oil for frying

For the sandwich

  • 2–4 soft sandwich rolls (French bread or hoagie-style)
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Pickles (optional)

For the sauce (remoulade-style)

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tsp hot sauce
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • ½ tsp paprika

Instructions

  1. Marinate the shrimp
    • Soak shrimp in buttermilk for 15–20 minutes.
  2. Prepare coating
    • Mix cornmeal, flour, and spices in a bowl.
  3. Fry the shrimp
    • Heat oil (medium-high).
    • Dredge shrimp in coating and fry 2–3 minutes until golden and crispy.
    • Drain on paper towels.
  4. Make the sauce
    • Mix all sauce ingredients until smooth.
  5. Assemble the po’ boy
    • Slice bread, spread sauce generously.
    • Add shrimp, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles.

Tips

  • Use fresh, crusty bread for the authentic feel
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan while frying
  • Add extra hot sauce if you like a spicy kick 🔥

If you want, I can show you a spicier Cajun-style version or a quick air fryer version to make it healthier.
