Sloppy joe

Here’s a classic Sloppy Joe 🍔—savory, slightly sweet, and messy in the best way!


Ingredients (4 servings)

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce or ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 1–2 tsp brown sugar (optional, for sweetness)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Cook the meat
    • In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef.
    • Drain excess fat if necessary.
  2. Add vegetables
    • Stir in onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook 3–5 minutes until softened.
  3. Make the sauce
    • Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and sugar.
    • Stir well and simmer 10–15 minutes, until thickened.
    • Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Serve
    • Spoon the meat mixture onto hamburger buns.
    • Optional: top with cheese, pickles, or coleslaw.

Tips & Variations

  • Spicier version: Add a pinch of chili powder or hot sauce.
  • Healthier: Use ground turkey or chicken and whole-wheat buns.
  • Make-ahead: The filling can be refrigerated for 2–3 days or frozen.
  • Extra gooey: Add shredded cheddar cheese on top before serving.
