Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Ingredients (serves 2–3)

Beef

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp oil

Vegetables

  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced

Sauce

  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp black pepper (more for extra kick)

For Stir-Frying

  • 2 tbsp oil (vegetable or peanut)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Optional: ½ tsp grated ginger

Instructions

  1. Marinate beef
    • Toss sliced beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, and oil.
    • Let sit 15–20 minutes (this keeps beef tender).
  2. Mix sauce
    • In a small bowl, whisk all sauce ingredients until smooth.
  3. Stir-fry beef
    • Heat 1 tbsp oil in a hot skillet or wok over high heat.
    • Add beef in a single layer. Sear 1–2 minutes per side.
    • Remove beef and set aside.
  4. Cook vegetables
    • Add remaining oil to the pan.
    • Stir-fry garlic (and ginger if using) for 30 seconds.
    • Add onions and peppers. Cook 2–3 minutes until slightly tender but crisp.
  5. Combine & thicken
    • Return beef to pan.
    • Pour in sauce and toss quickly.
    • Cook 1–2 minutes until sauce thickens and coats everything.
  6. Serve
    • Serve immediately over steamed rice or noodles.

Tips

  • Slice beef very thin for best texture
  • Use high heat to get that sizzling restaurant-style flavor
