Shepherd’s pie

Posted on January 10, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a hearty Shepherd’s Pie recipe 🥧—a classic comfort food with ground meat, vegetables, and creamy mashed potatoes on top:

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

For the filling:

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground lamb (or beef for Cottage Pie)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth (or vegetable broth for a lighter version)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (optional)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk (or cream for extra richness)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional: ¼ cup grated cheese (for a cheesy topping)

Instructions

1. Prepare the mashed potatoes

  1. Boil the chopped potatoes in salted water for 15–20 minutes, or until tender.
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. Set aside.

2. Cook the filling

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground meat over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  2. Add the onion, carrots, and garlic, and cook until softened (about 5 minutes).
  3. Stir in the tomato paste, then add the broth, Worcestershire sauce, peas, and thyme. Let simmer for 5–10 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

3. Assemble the Shepherd’s Pie

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C / 400°F.
  2. Transfer the meat mixture to a baking dish.
  3. Spoon the mashed potatoes over the meat, spreading them out evenly.
  4. (Optional) Sprinkle grated cheese on top of the mashed potatoes for a cheesy crust.

4. Bake

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling.

5. Serve

  • Let the pie cool for a few minutes before serving.

💡 Tips

  • Cottage Pie: If you use beef instead of lamb, it’s technically a Cottage Pie, but the method is the same.
  • You can make the mashed potatoes ahead of time to speed up the process.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day and can be easily reheated.

I can also give a quick 5-ingredient Shepherd’s Pie version that’s ready in under 45 minutes. Would you like that?
