Shepherd’s pie

Posted on February 4, 2026 by Admin

Got it! Let’s go through Shepherd’s Pie step by step in a clear, classic way. This is a comforting dish of savory meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes.

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

For the filling:

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • ½ cup (120 ml) beef or chicken broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)
  • 1 tbsp flour (optional, to thicken)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 800 g (1.75 lb) potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 50 g (¼ cup) butter
  • ½ cup (120 ml) milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: ½ cup (50 g) grated cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Cook the mashed potatoes:
    • Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, 15–20 minutes.
    • Drain, then mash with butter and milk until creamy. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Prepare the meat filling:
    • Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Sauté onion, garlic, and carrots until soft (3–5 minutes).
    • Add ground lamb (or beef) and cook until browned.
    • Stir in flour (if using), tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, broth, thyme, peas, salt, and pepper.
    • Simmer 5–10 minutes until thickened slightly.
  3. Assemble the pie:
    • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).
    • Spread the meat filling evenly in a baking dish.
    • Spread mashed potatoes over the top. Use a fork to make ridges for a crispy top.
    • Optional: sprinkle grated cheese on top.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake 20–25 minutes until the top is golden.
    • Optional: broil 2–3 minutes at the end for extra browning.
  5. Serve:
    • Let it rest 5 minutes before serving.
    • Delicious with a side of green salad or steamed veggies.

✅ Tips:

  • Use lamb for authentic Shepherd’s Pie; beef makes Cottage Pie.
  • For richer flavor, add a splash of red wine to the meat filling.
  • Can be made ahead: assemble, refrigerate, then bake before serving.

I can also give a 30-minute quick Shepherd’s Pie version using leftover mashed potatoes and pre-cooked vegetables—it’s super fast but still tasty.
