Shepherd’s pie

Posted on February 4, 2026 by Admin

Ah, Shepherd’s Pie—classic comfort food! Traditionally made with lamb (if using beef, it’s technically called Cottage Pie), it’s a savory meat and vegetable filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden. Here’s a detailed recipe:

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

For the filling:

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas (or mixed vegetables)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 120 ml (½ cup) beef or chicken broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)
  • 1 tbsp flour (optional, for thickening)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 800 g (1.75 lb) potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 50 g (¼ cup) butter
  • 120 ml (½ cup) milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 50 g (½ cup) grated cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mashed potatoes:
    • Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, 15–20 minutes.
    • Drain, mash with butter and milk until creamy. Season with salt and pepper.
    • Set aside.
  2. Cook the filling:
    • Heat oil/butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Sauté onion, garlic, and carrots until softened, about 5 minutes.
    • Add ground lamb (or beef), breaking it apart. Cook until browned.
    • Stir in flour (if using), tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, broth, thyme, peas, salt, and pepper.
    • Simmer 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  3. Assemble the pie:
    • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).
    • Spread the meat and vegetable mixture evenly in a baking dish.
    • Spoon mashed potatoes over the top and spread evenly.
    • Optional: sprinkle grated cheese over the mashed potatoes.
    • Use a fork to create small ridges for a golden finish.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and slightly crisp.
    • Optional: broil for 2–3 minutes at the end for extra browning.
  5. Serve:
    • Let cool 5 minutes before serving.
    • Great with a simple green salad or roasted vegetables.

✅ Tips for success:

  • Don’t overcook the filling; it will cook a little more in the oven.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine or a teaspoon of mustard to the filling.
  • You can make it ahead—assemble and refrigerate, then bake before serving.

If you want, I can also give a quick Shepherd’s Pie recipe that uses pre-cooked mashed potatoes or leftover roasted veggies—ready in about 30 minutes.

Do you want me to do that?
