Posted on February 2, 2026 by Admin

Ah, classic comfort food 😌🥧—Shepherd’s Pie! Creamy mashed potato topping, savory meat filling—it’s cozy and hearty. Here’s a full, traditional recipe:

🥧 Shepherd’s Pie (Traditional)

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

For the Meat Filling

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb (traditional) or beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2 lbs (900 g) potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk (or cream for richer topping)
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes until tender, 15–20 min.
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.

2️⃣ Make Meat Filling

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onion, carrots, and celery 5–6 min until softened.
  3. Add garlic, cook 30 sec.
  4. Add ground lamb (or beef), cook until browned.
  5. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  6. Pour in broth, simmer 5–10 min until slightly thickened.
  7. Stir in peas at the end.

3️⃣ Assemble Pie

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Spread meat filling in a baking dish.
  3. Top evenly with mashed potatoes.
  4. Optional: use fork to create peaks on potatoes for extra browning.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Bake 20–25 min until top is golden and filling is bubbling.

Tips for Success 😏

  • Don’t overcook the potatoes; they’ll dry out.
  • Add a bit of cheese on top for extra richness.
  • Can make ahead and refrigerate—just bake longer if cold.

I can also give a Juicy Jay’s Kitchen version with garlic-parmesan mashed potatoes, caramelized onions, and a rich demi-glace gravy, which turns it into a next-level comfort feast.
