Sausage Puffs 🥐🌭 — flaky, buttery puff pastry filled with savory sausage, perfect as appetizers, snacks, or party bites. Quick to make and always crowd-pleasing.
Ingredients (Makes ~12–16 puffs)
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 8 oz (225 g) sausage (breakfast sausage or Italian sausage, removed from casing)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 tsp fresh thyme or sage (optional)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter
Instructions
1️⃣ Preheat Oven
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2️⃣ Cook Sausage Filling
- Heat oil/butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- Cook sausage and onions (if using) until browned and fully cooked.
- Stir in herbs if desired. Let cool slightly.
3️⃣ Prepare Puff Pastry
- Roll thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface.
- Cut into squares (about 3×3 inches).
4️⃣ Assemble Puffs
- Spoon 1–2 tsp sausage mixture onto each square.
- Fold into triangles or rectangles, sealing edges with a fork.
- Brush tops with beaten egg.
5️⃣ Bake
- Bake 15–20 minutes until pastry is golden brown and puffed.
6️⃣ Serve
- Serve warm as a snack, breakfast item, or appetizer.
- Optional dipping sauces: mustard, ketchup, or a spicy aioli.
Tips
- Freeze uncooked sausage puffs on a baking sheet, then transfer to a bag — bake straight from frozen (add 5–7 minutes to baking time).
- For extra flavor, sprinkle grated cheese inside or on top before baking.
- Use store-bought puff pastry for convenience; homemade pastry gives a flakier texture.
I can also give a mini cocktail sausage puff version that’s perfect for parties and finger foods.
