Here’s a classic Salisbury Steak recipe 🥩🍽️—juicy beef patties with a rich, savory onion gravy.


Salisbury Steak

Ingredients (4 servings)

Steak Patties

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp ketchup or tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (slurry for thickening)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make patties
    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, Worcestershire, salt, and pepper.
    • Shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Cook patties
    • Heat 1 tbsp oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side (they don’t need to cook through yet). Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Make gravy
    • In the same skillet, melt butter or add oil.
    • Sauté sliced onions until soft and golden (5–6 minutes).
    • Add beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Combine and simmer
    • Return patties to skillet.
    • Cover and simmer 15–20 minutes, until patties are cooked through.
    • Stir in cornstarch slurry to thicken gravy. Simmer 1–2 minutes until glossy.
  5. Serve
    • Spoon gravy and onions over patties.
    • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Tips

  • Extra flavor: Add 1 tsp Dijon mustard or a splash of soy sauce to the gravy.
  • Cheesy variation: Top patties with a slice of cheddar or Swiss before serving.
  • Make-ahead: Patties can be formed ahead of time; store covered in the fridge.
  • Low-carb option: Skip breadcrumbs or use almond flour.
