Here’s a classic Patty Melt recipe 🥩🧅🧀—a juicy burger turned into a melty, crispy sandwich.


Patty Melt

Ingredients (2 sandwiches)

  • 8 slices of rye bread (or your favorite sandwich bread)
  • ½ lb (225 g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Caramelize onions
    • Melt 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Add onions and a pinch of salt. Cook 10–12 minutes, stirring often, until soft and golden. Remove from pan and set aside.
  2. Form & cook patties
    • Divide ground beef into 2 patties, slightly larger than your bread slices.
    • Season with salt and pepper.
    • In the same skillet, cook patties 3–4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
  3. Assemble sandwiches
    • Place cheese on one slice of bread, then a patty, then caramelized onions, and top with another slice of bread.
  4. Grill sandwiches
    • Melt remaining butter in the skillet over medium heat.
    • Grill sandwiches 2–3 minutes per side, pressing slightly, until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.
  5. Serve
    • Slice in half and serve hot. Perfect with pickles or fries.

Tips

  • Extra melty: Use a mix of Swiss and cheddar.
  • Crispier bread: Butter both sides of bread before grilling.
  • Flavor boost: Add a little Dijon mustard to the patty or spread on bread.
  • Variations: Use caramelized onions and mushrooms for a richer taste.
