- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1–2 tbsp butter
- Optional: Thousand Island or mayonnaise
Instructions
- Caramelize onions
- Heat 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions and cook 10–15 minutes until soft and golden brown. Stir occasionally.
- Cook beef patty
- Form ground beef into a patty slightly smaller than your bread.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Cook in the same skillet over medium heat 3–4 minutes per side, until desired doneness.
- Assemble sandwich
- Butter one side of each slice of bread.
- Place cheese on the unbuttered side, then the cooked patty, caramelized onions, and top with remaining cheese.
- Close sandwich with the second slice, buttered side out.
- Grill sandwich
- Heat skillet over medium-low heat.
- Cook sandwich 3–4 minutes per side until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted. Press lightly with spatula for even grilling.
- Serve
- Slice in half and enjoy immediately. Optional: serve with pickles or fries.
Tips & Variations
- Cheese options: Swiss, cheddar, or Gruyère for different flavors.
- Extra flavor: Spread a thin layer of mustard or Thousand Island dressing on the bread.
- Crispier bread: Use a combination of butter and a light drizzle of oil.
- Mini sliders: Make smaller versions for appetizers or snacks.
I can also give a classic diner-style patty melt with sautéed onions and special sauce or a cheddar-bacon twist version.
