Patty melt

Here’s a classic Patty Melt recipe—a juicy burger patty with melted cheese on grilled bread, caramelized onions included 🧅🧀🍔


Patty Melt

Ingredients (makes 2 sandwiches)

  • 1/2 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2–3 tbsp butter (for onions and bread)
  • 4 slices rye bread (or your favorite bread)
  • 4 slices cheese (Swiss, cheddar, or a mix)
  • Optional: mustard or mayo

Instructions

  1. Caramelize onions
    • Heat 1–2 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.
    • Add onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and soft (~10–12 minutes). Remove from skillet.
  2. Cook patties
    • Shape ground beef into 2 thin patties, slightly larger than bread slices.
    • Season with salt and pepper.
    • In the same skillet, cook patties 3–4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Remove and keep warm.
  3. Assemble sandwiches
    • Place a slice of cheese on each patty. Top with caramelized onions.
    • Sandwich between two slices of bread.
  4. Grill sandwiches
    • Melt remaining butter in the skillet over medium heat.
    • Grill sandwiches 2–3 minutes per side until bread is golden and cheese melts. Press gently with a spatula for even cooking.
  5. Serve
    • Slice in half and enjoy hot.

Tips & Variations

  • Cheese: Swiss is traditional, but cheddar, provolone, or Gruyère work well.
  • Bread: Rye gives a classic flavor; sourdough is a good alternative.
  • Extra flavor: Spread a thin layer of mustard or horseradish sauce on the bread.
  • Make ahead: Caramelized onions can be prepared in advance and stored in the fridge.
