Old Fashioned Custard Pie

Posted on March 15, 2026 by Admin

Old-Fashioned Custard Pie is a classic, silky dessert made with eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla baked in a flaky crust. 🥧✨ It’s simple, comforting, and has been a staple in home baking for generations.

Ingredients

For the filling

  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2½ cups milk (warm)
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg

For the crust

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat the oven

Set oven to 175°C / 350°F.

2️⃣ Prepare the custard

  1. In a bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, and salt until smooth.
  2. Slowly add warm milk while whisking.
  3. Stir in vanilla extract.

3️⃣ Fill the crust

  • Place the pie crust in a pie dish.
  • Pour the custard mixture into the crust.
  • Sprinkle nutmeg on top.

4️⃣ Bake

Bake for 45–50 minutes until the center is just set (it should slightly jiggle).

5️⃣ Cool

Let the pie cool completely so the custard firms up.

Serving ideas

  • Serve chilled or at room temperature.
  • Add whipped cream or a light dusting of cinnamon.

💡 Old baking tip:
If the crust edges brown too fast, cover them with foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
