Mille-feuille (French for “a thousand layers”) is a classic French pastry made with thin layers of puff pastry and creamy filling. It is also commonly called the Napoleon pastry.

🥐 What It’s Made Of

Traditional mille-feuille has three layers of Puff Pastry filled with Pastry Cream and topped with Powdered Sugar or icing.

Typical layers:

  1. Crispy puff pastry
  2. Vanilla pastry cream
  3. Puff pastry
  4. More cream
  5. Top puff pastry with icing or sugar

👩‍🍳 Simple Homemade Version

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 2 cups vanilla pastry cream or custard
  • Powdered sugar for topping

Steps

  1. Bake puff pastry at 200 °C (400 °F) until golden and crisp.
  2. Let it cool and cut into 3 equal rectangles.
  3. Spread pastry cream on the first layer.
  4. Place the second pastry layer and add more cream.
  5. Add the final pastry layer and sprinkle powdered sugar.
