Lines/ripples in nails

Posted on April 3, 2026 by Admin

Lines or ripples in your nails are pretty common, and most of the time they’re harmless—but the type and direction of the lines matter.

🧭 Types of nail lines & what they can mean

1. Vertical ridges (up-and-down lines)

  • Very common, especially with age
  • Usually normal and not a concern
  • Can be linked to:
    • Dry nails
    • Mild nutrient deficiencies (like iron or B vitamins)

👉 If your nails are otherwise healthy, these are usually nothing to worry about.

2. Horizontal lines (across the nail)

These need more attention.

👉 Beau’s lines

  • Deep horizontal grooves
  • Can happen after:
    • Severe illness (high fever, infection)
    • Major stress or trauma
    • Surgery
  • The line marks a temporary pause in nail growth

3. Pitting (tiny dents or ripples)

  • Looks like small pinholes or uneven surface
  • Often linked to skin conditions like:
    • Psoriasis
    • Eczema

4. White lines or discoloration

  • Could be minor trauma
  • Sometimes linked to mineral imbalance (rarely serious)

🚨 When to pay attention

You should consider getting it checked if:

  • Lines appear suddenly or worsen quickly
  • You also have fatigue, hair loss, or pale skin (possible anemia)
  • Nails become brittle, discolored, or separate from the nail bed
  • You notice other symptoms like skin rashes or joint pain

👍 What helps improve nail health

  • Eat enough protein, iron, zinc, and biotin
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid excessive nail trauma (biting, harsh manicures)
  • Moisturize nails and cuticles regularly

If you want, you can describe what your nails look like (or send a pic), and I’ll help you figure out which type you’re dealing with.
