Ingredients (serves 4)

Pasta

  • 12 oz (340 g) spaghetti, fettuccine, or your favorite pasta
  • Salt for boiling water

Sauce

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving

Instructions

1. Cook the pasta

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  • Cook pasta according to package instructions until al dente.
  • Drain, reserving ½ cup pasta water, and set aside.

2. Make the sauce

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onion until translucent (~5 minutes).
  3. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add ground beef or sausage and cook until browned.
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper.
  6. Simmer 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add reserved pasta water to loosen sauce if needed.

3. Combine

  • Toss the cooked pasta in the sauce until well coated.

4. Serve

  • Plate pasta, sprinkle with grated Parmesan and fresh herbs.

Tips

  • For extra richness, add a splash of red wine when browning the meat.
  • Can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Add sautéed vegetables like mushrooms or zucchini for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Use fresh pasta if available for an authentic Italian texture.
