Hamburger steak

Here’s a classic Hamburger Steak recipe 🍽️🥩

Ingredients (serves ~2–3)

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (half for patties, half for gravy)
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter

For the gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare patties
    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, half the chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Form into 4 evenly sized patties.
  2. Cook patties
    • Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. Make gravy
    • In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté remaining onions until soft.
    • Stir in flour and cook 1 minute.
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth and simmer until thickened. Season with salt & pepper.
  4. Serve
    Pour gravy over hamburger steaks. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Tips

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for the juiciest patties.
  • Can add Worcestershire sauce or mushrooms to gravy for extra flavor.
  • For a lighter version, bake patties at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes instead of pan-frying.
