Fried green tomatoes

Posted on January 9, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Southern recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes 🍅✨—crispy on the outside, tangy and tender on the inside:

Ingredients (4 servings)

  • 3–4 medium green tomatoes, sliced ½ inch thick
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornmeal
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk or buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Optional dipping sauce:

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp hot sauce or sriracha
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Instructions

1. Prepare the tomatoes

  • Slice green tomatoes ½ inch thick.
  • Sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper.

2. Set up breading

  • In one shallow bowl, place flour.
  • In a second bowl, whisk eggs and milk.
  • In a third bowl, mix cornmeal with paprika, salt, and pepper.

3. Bread the tomatoes

  • Dip each tomato slice first in flour, then in egg mixture, then coat with cornmeal.
  • Press gently to adhere.

4. Fry the tomatoes

  • Heat ¼ inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Fry tomato slices 2–3 minutes per side, until golden and crispy.
  • Drain on paper towels.

5. Serve

  • Serve warm, optionally with a tangy dipping sauce.

Tips

  • Use firm, unripe green tomatoes for best texture.
  • Maintain medium heat: too hot burns the coating; too low makes them soggy.
  • For a lighter version, bake at 425°F (220°C) for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway.

If you want, I can give you a Southern-style plate suggestion with fried green tomatoes, like pairing them with shrimp, grits, or a fresh salad for a full meal.

Do you want me to do that?
