Here’s a Southern-style Fried Chicken Dumplings recipe 🍗🥟
(This is the old-fashioned skillet version—dumplings pan-fried with chicken, not deep-fried.)
Fried Chicken Dumplings (Southern Skillet Style)
Ingredients (serves 4)
Chicken
- 2–3 cups cooked chicken, chopped or shredded
- 2 tbsp butter or bacon grease
Dumplings
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp salt
- ¾–1 cup water or milk
- Extra flour for rolling
Seasoning
- Salt & black pepper, to taste
- Optional: pinch of poultry seasoning or garlic powder
Instructions
- Make dumpling dough
- In a bowl, mix flour and salt.
- Gradually stir in water or milk until a firm dough forms.
- Turn dough onto a floured surface and roll thin (almost noodle-thin).
- Cut into squares or strips.
- Pan-fry dumplings
- Heat butter or bacon grease in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add dumplings in a single layer.
- Cook until golden and crisp on both sides. Remove and set aside.
- Cook chicken
- In the same skillet, add chicken.
- Season with salt, pepper, and optional seasoning.
- Cook until lightly browned and heated through.
- Combine
- Add dumplings back to the skillet with chicken.
- Toss gently so dumplings absorb flavor and soften slightly.
- Serve
- Serve hot, straight from the skillet.
Tips & Variations
- Use leftover fried or roasted chicken for best flavor
- Add a splash of chicken broth at the end if you want softer dumplings
- Great served with fried cabbage, green beans, or collard greens
- For crispier dumplings, don’t overcrowd the skillet
