French Onion Meatloaf

Posted on January 5, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a flavorful twist on classic meatloaf: French Onion Meatloaf—juicy ground beef baked with caramelized onions, topped with a savory onion sauce. 🧅🥩

🥩 French Onion Meatloaf

🧾 Ingredients (6 servings)

For the Meatloaf:

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup French fried onions (or ½ cup caramelized onions)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried thyme (optional)

For the French Onion Topping/Sauce:

  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup French fried onions

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat Oven

  • Preheat oven to 180 °C / 350 °F.
  • Grease a loaf pan or line with parchment paper.

2️⃣ Prepare the Meatloaf

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  2. Mix gently until just combined (avoid overmixing).
  3. Shape into a loaf and place in the prepared pan.

3️⃣ Bake the Meatloaf

  • Bake for 45–50 minutes.

4️⃣ Add French Onion Topping

  1. While the meatloaf bakes, mix beef broth and Worcestershire sauce in a small saucepan.
  2. Simmer for a few minutes to slightly reduce.
  3. About 10 minutes before meatloaf is done, pour sauce over the loaf.
  4. Sprinkle French fried onions on top and return to oven to finish baking.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Let rest 5 minutes before slicing.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables.

⭐ Tips

  • For deeper onion flavor, caramelize fresh onions before adding to the meat mixture.
  • Use half ground beef, half ground pork for extra juiciness.
  • Leftovers reheat well in the oven or microwave.
  • Optional: top with shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese for an even richer French Onion flavor.

I can also give a one-pan version with potatoes and carrots roasted alongside the meatloaf—super convenient for an all-in-one meal.

Do you want me to do that?
