Crumb cake

Here’s a classic, tender crumb cake recipe — soft cake base with a buttery, sweet crumb topping.


🍰 Classic Crumb Cake

Ingredients (9×13-inch pan)

Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Crumb Topping

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat oven

  • 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.

2️⃣ Make the cake

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  • Beat in eggs and vanilla.
  • Alternately mix in dry ingredients and buttermilk until smooth.

3️⃣ Prepare crumb topping

  • Mix flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
  • Stir in melted butter until mixture is crumbly.

4️⃣ Assemble

  • Pour cake batter into prepared pan.
  • Sprinkle crumb topping evenly over the batter.

5️⃣ Bake

  • Bake 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick in the center comes out clean.

6️⃣ Cool & serve

  • Let cool slightly before slicing. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Tips & Variations

  • Add 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans) to the crumb topping for extra crunch.
  • For a fruity twist, layer sliced apples or berries under the crumb topping.
  • Dust with powdered sugar before serving for a classic look.
