Posted on March 1, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a rich and tender Classic Homemade Chocolate Buttermilk Cake recipe — soft, moist, and perfect for any celebration.

🍫 Classic Chocolate Buttermilk Cake

Ingredients (2 8-inch round cakes)

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat oven

  • 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans, or line with parchment paper.

2️⃣ Mix dry ingredients

  • In a bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

3️⃣ Cream butter and sugar

  • In a separate large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • Stir in vanilla extract.

4️⃣ Combine wet and dry ingredients

  • Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with dry ingredients.
  • Mix until just combined — do not overmix.

5️⃣ Bake

  • Divide batter evenly between prepared pans.
  • Bake 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

6️⃣ Cool

  • Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

🍴 Frosting Suggestions

  • Chocolate buttercream
  • Cream cheese frosting
  • Whipped chocolate ganache

Tips

  • Use room temperature ingredients for smoother batter.
  • Sift cocoa powder to prevent lumps.
  • For extra moist cake, brush layers with simple syrup before frosting.

If you want, I can give a one-bowl, super moist chocolate buttermilk cake version that’s faster and just as rich.
