Cabbage dumplings

Here’s a simple, comforting Cabbage Dumplings recipe 🥬🥟
(This version is soft, homemade dumplings cooked with cabbage—very popular in Southern and old-fashioned cooking.)


Cabbage Dumplings

Ingredients (serves ~4)

  • 1 small head cabbage, chopped
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

Dumplings

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾–1 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

  1. Cook cabbage
    • In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat.
    • Add cabbage and onion. Cook 5–7 minutes until slightly softened.
    • Pour in broth, season with salt and pepper, and bring to a gentle boil.
  2. Make dumpling dough
    • In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
    • Stir in milk and melted butter until a thick, sticky dough forms.
  3. Add dumplings
    • Reduce broth to a simmer.
    • Drop spoonfuls of dumpling dough directly on top of the cabbage.
    • Cover the pot tightly and do not lift the lid.
  4. Cook
    • Simmer covered for 12–15 minutes until dumplings are fluffy and cooked through.
  5. Serve
    • Taste and adjust seasoning.
    • Serve hot, spooning broth and cabbage over the dumplings.

Tips & Variations

  • Add smoked sausage or bacon for extra flavor
  • For richer dumplings, replace some milk with buttermilk
  • Can add carrots or potatoes to the cabbage
  • For thinner, noodle-style dumplings, roll dough thin and cut into strips
