Soft Bread Rolls

Ingredients (makes 12 rolls):

  • 3 ½ cups (450 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240 ml) warm milk or water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp butter or oil (softened)

Instructions:

  1. Activate yeast
    Mix warm milk/water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the dough
    In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and butter/oil.
    Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead
    Knead 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic (by hand or mixer).
  4. First rise
    Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1 hour until doubled.
  5. Shape rolls
    Punch down dough. Divide into 12 equal pieces and roll into balls.
    Place on a greased or lined baking tray.
  6. Second rise
    Cover and let rise 30–40 minutes until puffy.
  7. Bake
    Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    Bake 15–18 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Finish
    Brush tops with melted butter for extra softness.

  • For extra soft rolls, replace water with milk.
  • Add 1 egg to the dough for richer rolls.
  • Great for burgers, sandwiches, or served with soup.
