Amish onion fritters

Here’s a classic recipe for Amish Onion Fritters—crispy, golden, and full of sweet onion flavor 🧅✨

Amish Onion Fritters

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

1. Prepare the batter

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  2. In another bowl, beat the egg with milk.
  3. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until smooth.

2. Coat the onions

  1. Add the sliced onions to the batter, ensuring all pieces are well coated.

3. Fry the fritters

  1. Heat ½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Drop spoonfuls of the onion mixture into the hot oil, flattening slightly.
  3. Fry 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crisp.
  4. Drain on paper towels.

4. Serve

  • Serve warm as a side dish or snack. Optional: sprinkle a little salt or serve with applesauce or sour cream.

Tips & Variations

  • Crispier fritters: Let the batter rest 10–15 minutes before frying.
  • Cheesy twist: Add ¼ cup shredded cheddar or Parmesan to the batter.
  • Sweet-savory: Add a pinch of sugar to bring out the onion’s sweetness.
  • Large batch: Keep cooked fritters warm in a 200°F oven while frying the rest.

I can also give you a baked Amish Onion Fritter version that’s lighter but still golden and tasty. Do you want that version?
