Classic southern dessert recipe

Here’s another true classic Southern dessertβ€”old-school, simple, and always a hit.

🍌 Southern Banana Pudding (No-Fail Classic)

Ingredients

  • 1 box vanilla wafers
  • 4–5 ripe bananas, sliced

Pudding

  • 1 cup sugar
  • β…“ cup all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 4 egg yolks (save whites)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Meringue (classic Southern style)

  • 4 egg whites
  • ΒΌ cup sugar
  • Β½ tsp vanilla

Instructions

  1. Make pudding:
    In a saucepan, mix sugar, flour, and salt. Slowly whisk in milk.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick.
  3. Beat egg yolks lightly. Temper with hot pudding, then return to pot.
  4. Cook 2 more minutes. Remove from heat.
  5. Stir in butter and vanilla.

Assemble

  1. In a baking dish, layer wafers β†’ bananas β†’ pudding.
  2. Repeat layers, ending with pudding.

Meringue

  1. Beat egg whites until soft peaks.
  2. Slowly add sugar, beat until stiff and glossy.
  3. Spread over pudding, sealing edges.
  4. Bake at 350Β°F for 10–12 minutes until golden.

Southern Rules 😌

  • Best served slightly warm or chilled overnight
  • Bananas must be ripe, not green
  • Homemade pudding > instant (always)

Optional Modern Twist

  • Swap meringue for whipped cream
  • Add caramel drizzle or crushed pecans
  • Use Chessman cookies instead of wafers
