Soft Bread Rolls

Servings: 8–10
Prep time: 15 min
Rise time: 1–1.5 hours
Bake time: 15–20 min


Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups (440 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240 ml) warm milk (105–110°F / 40–43°C)
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • Optional: melted butter for brushing

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast
    • In a small bowl, mix warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the dough
    • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
    • Add yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead & first rise
    • Knead dough on a floured surface 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1–1.5 hours until doubled.
  4. Shape rolls
    • Punch down dough and divide into 8–10 equal pieces.
    • Shape each piece into a ball and place on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
    • Cover and let rise another 20–30 minutes.
  5. Bake
    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Bake rolls 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
    • Optional: brush with melted butter immediately after baking for a soft, shiny crust.
  6. Cool & serve
    • Let rolls cool slightly before serving.

🔥 Tips

  • For extra soft rolls, replace 2 tbsp of flour with 2 tbsp milk powder.
  • Can add herbs, cheese, or garlic to the dough for flavored rolls.
  • Store in an airtight container for 2–3 days or freeze for longer storage.
