Slow cooker cabbage

Posted on January 25, 2026 by Admin

Ah, Slow Cooker Cabbage 🥬—a simple, hearty, and flavorful dish. Perfect as a side or a base for meats like sausage or pork. Cooking it low and slow brings out sweetness and tenderness without much effort.

Slow Cooker Cabbage

Servings: 4–6
Prep time: 10 min
Cook time: 4–5 hours

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped or shredded
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 1 cup vegetable or chicken broth
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Optional: 1 tsp smoked paprika or caraway seeds for extra flavor
  • Optional: cooked bacon or sausage, chopped, for added richness

Instructions

  1. Prepare vegetables
    • Chop cabbage into bite-sized pieces and slice the onion.
    • Mince garlic.
  2. Layer in slow cooker
    • Place onions and garlic at the bottom.
    • Add cabbage on top.
    • Drizzle with olive oil and pour in broth.
    • Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and optional seasonings.
  3. Cook
    • Cover and cook on low for 4–5 hours or on high for 2–3 hours, until cabbage is tender.
  4. Finish & serve
    • Stir gently before serving.
    • Optional: top with cooked bacon or sausage pieces.

🔥 Tips

  • For a slightly tangy flavor, add 1–2 tbsp apple cider vinegar near the end of cooking.
  • You can add carrots, bell peppers, or potatoes for a more substantial dish.
  • Avoid over-stirring; slow cooker cabbage becomes very soft if stirred too much.
  • Perfect as a side for meats like pork chops, corned beef, or kielbasa.

I can also give you a creamy slow cooker cabbage recipe that adds sour cream and cheese for a richer, comforting version.

Do you want the creamy version?
