🥩 Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1½ lb ground beef
  • 1 cup crushed saltine crackers or breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Gravy & Bake

  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 3–4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • Optional: sliced mushrooms or onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven:
    350°F (175°C). Grease a large baking dish.
  2. Make hamburger steaks:
    Mix ground beef, crackers, egg, milk, onion, salt, and pepper.
    Form into 4–6 oval patties.
  3. Brown patties:
    Heat butter in a skillet and brown patties on both sides (don’t cook through).
  4. Layer dish:
    Arrange sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Season lightly with salt & pepper.
    Place hamburger steaks on top.
  5. Make gravy:
    Whisk beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, flour, and Worcestershire sauce.
    Pour evenly over patties and potatoes.
  6. Bake:
    Cover with foil and bake 60 minutes.
    Uncover and bake 10–15 minutes more until bubbly and potatoes are tender.
  7. Rest & serve:
    Let rest 10 minutes before serving.

  • Add green beans or carrots for a full one-dish meal
  • Swap potatoes for egg noodles (add during last 30 minutes)
  • Use cream of chicken if preferred
  • For extra richness, add a splash of cream
