Posted on January 14, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Hungarian Walnut Torte (Diós Torta)—rich, nutty, and elegant, perfect for dessert lovers who enjoy layered walnut goodness 🌰🍰

Ingredients (for 8–10 servings)

For the Cake Layers

  • 1 cup (100 g) ground walnuts
  • ½ cup (100 g) sugar
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

For the Buttercream Filling

  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup (60 g) powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp strong coffee or milk
  • Optional: 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional Garnish

  • Chopped walnuts
  • Cocoa powder or chocolate shavings

Instructions

1. Preheat oven

  • Oven: 175°C / 350°F
  • Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans.

2. Prepare cake layers

  1. Beat egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff peaks form.
  2. In another bowl, beat egg yolks with sugar and vanilla until pale and creamy.
  3. Gently fold yolk mixture into egg whites.
  4. Fold in ground walnuts and flour carefully, keeping mixture light and airy.
  5. Divide batter between prepared pans.
  6. Bake 20–25 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool completely on wire racks.

3. Make the buttercream

  1. Beat butter until fluffy.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar.
  3. Add coffee (or milk) and vanilla; beat until smooth and spreadable.

4. Assemble the torte

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate.
  2. Spread a thick layer of buttercream on top.
  3. Place the second cake layer on top and cover with remaining buttercream.
  4. Garnish with chopped walnuts or chocolate shavings if desired.

5. Chill and serve

  • Refrigerate 1–2 hours before slicing for best flavor and stability.

Tips & Variations

  • Make it extra nutty: Lightly toast the walnuts before grinding.
  • Coffee flavor: Brush cake layers with coffee or espresso for deeper taste.
  • Chocolate twist: Add a thin layer of melted dark chocolate between layers.
  • Storage: Keeps well in the fridge for 3–4 days; bring to room temp before serving.

If you want, I can give a “luxury Hungarian Walnut Torte” recipe with multi-layered cake, mocha buttercream, and chocolate glaze—basically a bakery-style showstopper.

Do you want me to do that version?
