Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground meat
    (traditionally a mix of beef & pork)
  • 1 small onion, very finely chopped
  • 1 stale bread roll or 2 slices white bread
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley (optional)
  • Oil or butter for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare bread
    • Soak bread in milk until soft.
    • Squeeze out excess milk.
  2. Mix meat
    • Combine ground meat, soaked bread, onion, egg, salt, pepper, mustard, paprika, and parsley.
    • Mix gently—do not overwork.
  3. Shape
    • Form into oval or round patties, about palm-sized.
  4. Fry
    • Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Fry frikadellen 5–6 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
  5. Serve
    • Rest 2 minutes before serving.
