๐Ÿชฑ Parasitism

Parasitism is a type of biological relationship in which one organism benefits while the other is harmed.

๐Ÿง  Simple definition

Parasitism = โ€œone wins, one losesโ€

  • ๐Ÿ› Parasite โ†’ benefits (gets food, shelter, or nutrients)
  • ๐Ÿง Host โ†’ is harmed (loses nutrients, gets weakened or diseased)

๐Ÿพ Examples

๐Ÿœ In humans and animals

  • Fleas on dogs
  • Ticks feeding on blood
  • Tapeworms in the intestine

  • Some plants take nutrients from other plants (like dodder plant)

โš–๏ธ Key features

  • Parasite depends on the host to survive
  • Usually does not kill the host immediately (so it can keep living)

๐Ÿ”„ Difference from other relationships

  • ๐Ÿค Mutualism โ†’ both benefit
  • ๐Ÿ˜ Commensalism โ†’ one benefits, other unaffected
