Cleaning dirty bed pillows

Posted on April 17, 2026 by Admin

Cleaning dirty pillows is important because they collect sweat, dust, skin oils, and dust mites over time.

Here’s a simple and safe way to clean most Bed pillow at home:

🧼 1. Check the label first

  • Look for washing instructions
  • Most cotton, polyester, and microfiber pillows are washable
  • Memory foam pillows usually are NOT machine-washable

🧺 2. Machine washing (safe for most pillows)

Steps:

  • Wash 2 pillows together (balances the machine)
  • Use warm water
  • Add mild detergent
  • Use gentle cycle

☀️ 3. Drying properly (very important)

  • Dry in sunlight if possible 🌞
  • Or use a dryer on low heat
  • Add tennis balls in dryer to keep fluffiness

👉 Make sure pillow is completely dry to avoid mold

🧽 4. Hand washing (for delicate pillows)

  • Soak in warm water + detergent
  • Gently squeeze (don’t twist harshly)
  • Rinse thoroughly
  • Air dry fully

🧠 5. Freshening between washes

  • Sun-dry pillows weekly
  • Sprinkle baking soda, leave 30 min, then vacuum
  • Use pillow covers and wash them regularly

⚠️ What NOT to do

  • ❌ Don’t wash memory foam in machine
  • ❌ Don’t store damp pillows
  • ❌ Don’t use strong bleach (can damage filling)

✔️ How often to clean

  • Wash every 3–6 months
  • Pillow covers: every 1–2 weeks

🧾 Bottom line

Most pillows can be cleaned in a washing machine with gentle detergent and must be fully dried in sunlight or dryer to stay hygienic and odor-free.
