Shepherd’s pie

Here’s a classic shepherd’s pie recipe 🥧—hearty, comforting, and perfect for a family meal.


🥕 Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients (4–6 servings)

For the filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb or beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas (or mixed vegetables)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 tsp thyme or rosemary
  • Salt & pepper to taste

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 2–3 tbsp butter
  • ¼–½ cup milk
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Make mashed potatoes
    • Boil potatoes until tender, drain.
    • Mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  2. Cook filling
    • In a pan, sauté onions, garlic, and carrots until soft.
    • Add ground meat and cook until browned.
    • Stir in tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, herbs, salt, and pepper.
    • Simmer 5–10 minutes until thickened.
    • Stir in peas at the end.
  3. Assemble pie
    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Spread meat filling evenly in a baking dish.
    • Top with mashed potatoes, spreading evenly.
    • Optional: use a fork to create texture on top.
  4. Bake
    • Bake 20–25 minutes until top is golden and edges bubble.

⭐ Tips & Variations

  • Cheesy top: sprinkle shredded cheddar on mashed potatoes before baking
  • Vegetarian: use lentils, mushrooms, or plant-based meat instead of lamb/beef
  • Air fryer mini version: use small oven-safe dishes at 360°F (182°C) for 12–15 minutes
