Here’s a simple, classic scones recipe—perfect for breakfast, tea, or snacks ☕🍓

Classic Scones

Makes 8–10 scones

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 2/3 cup milk (or cream for richer scones)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional add-ins: chocolate chips, berries, raisins, or nuts

For the glaze (optional):

  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1–2 tbsp sugar

Instructions

1. Preheat Oven

  • Preheat to 400°F (200°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

3. Cut in Butter

  • Add cold butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

4. Add Wet Ingredients

  • In a small bowl, whisk milk, egg, and vanilla.
  • Pour into dry ingredients and mix until just combined (do not overmix).

5. Shape Scones

  • Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface.
  • Pat into a circle about 1 inch thick.
  • Cut into 8 wedges or use a cookie cutter for rounds.

6. Bake

  • Place scones on baking sheet.
  • Optional: brush tops with milk and sprinkle sugar.
  • Bake 15–20 minutes until golden brown.

7. Cool & Serve

  • Let cool slightly and enjoy warm, plain or with jam, butter, or cream.

Tips

  • Keep butter cold for flaky scones.
  • Don’t overmix—the dough should be slightly shaggy.
  • Variations: lemon zest + blueberries, chocolate chip, or cranberry-orange.
