When the liver is diseased, these parts begin to hurt

Posted on March 22, 2026 by Admin

When the liver is affected by disease, the pain isn’t always obvious at first—but when it does show up, it’s usually felt in specific areas of the body.

📍 Common Pain Locations with Liver Problems

1. Upper Right Abdomen (most common)

  • Pain is typically felt just under the right rib cage
  • This is where the liver sits
  • The pain may feel:
    • Dull or aching
    • Sharp (in more severe cases)
    • Like a sense of fullness or pressure

2. Right Shoulder or Upper Back

  • Liver pain can radiate to the right shoulder blade area
  • This happens due to shared nerve pathways (referred pain)

3. Upper Middle Abdomen

  • Sometimes discomfort spreads toward the center of the upper abdomen, especially with swelling or inflammation

⚠️ Other Symptoms (Often more noticeable than pain)

Liver disease doesn’t always cause pain early on. Watch for:

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Yellowing of skin/eyes (Jaundice)
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Dark urine, pale stools
  • Swelling in abdomen or legs

🚨 Important to Know

  • The liver itself has few pain nerves, so early disease can be silent
  • Pain usually appears when the liver becomes inflamed, enlarged, or when surrounding tissues are affected

🩺 When to see a doctor

Seek medical attention if you have:

  • Persistent pain in the upper right abdomen
  • Yellowing of eyes/skin
  • Unexplained weight loss or swelling

If you want, I can help you identify possible causes (like fatty liver, hepatitis, etc.) based on your symptoms.
