Shepherd’s pie

Posted on March 12, 2026 by Admin

Shepherd’s Pie 🥧 is a classic comfort dish originating from the United Kingdom and Ireland. Traditionally, it’s made with ground lamb (hence “shepherd”) and topped with mashed potatoes before baking until golden.

Main Ingredients

  • ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • potatoes – mashed for the topping
  • onion – diced, sautĂ©ed with meat
  • carrot – diced
  • peas – optional, for sweetness and color
  • Butter, milk, salt, pepper

Simple Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas (optional)
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1–2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Cook the filling
In a skillet, cook lamb, onion, and carrots until meat is browned and vegetables are tender. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in peas if using.
  2. Assemble
Spread the meat mixture evenly in a baking dish. Top with mashed potatoes and smooth the surface. Dot with butter.
  3. Bake
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes, until the potato topping is lightly golden.

Tips & Variations

  • Cheesy topping: Mix shredded cheddar into the mashed potatoes.
  • Gravy boost: Stir a spoonful of beef or lamb gravy into the meat mixture.
  • Vegetable twist: Add corn, parsnips, or celery for extra flavor.

Shepherd’s Pie is hearty, warming, and perfect for using leftover mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables.

I can also give you a quick stovetop version that doesn’t require baking if you want a faster meal.
