Posted on March 9, 2026 by Admin

🌵 Schlumbergera truncata

Schlumbergera truncata is a popular flowering houseplant often called the Thanksgiving cactus. It belongs to the cactus family but grows very differently from desert cacti.

🌿 Key Characteristics

  • Plant type: Epiphytic cactus (naturally grows on trees in forests)
  • Origin: Brazil’s tropical rainforests
  • Stems: Flat, segmented, and slightly pointed edges
  • Flowers: Pink, red, white, orange, or purple
  • Bloom time: Usually late fall to early winter

🌸 Difference from Christmas Cactus

Many people confuse it with the Christmas cactus.

Feature Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) Christmas cactus
Leaf edges Pointed, claw-like Rounded
Bloom time November December–January
Flower shape More tubular Slightly drooping

☀️ Care Guide

Light

  • Bright indirect sunlight
  • Avoid harsh direct sun

Water

  • Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil dries
  • Do not let soil stay soggy

Temperature

  • Ideal: 16–22°C (60–72°F)

Soil

  • Well-draining mix (cactus soil + peat + perlite)

🌺 How to Make It Bloom

To encourage flowering:

  1. Give 12–14 hours of darkness daily for about 6 weeks in autumn.
  2. Keep temperatures slightly cooler (10–15°C / 50–59°F at night).
  3. Reduce watering slightly during this period.

Buds usually appear afterward.

🌱 Propagation

Very easy to propagate:

  1. Break off 2–3 stem segments.
  2. Let the cut end dry for 1 day.
  3. Plant in moist soil.
  4. Roots form in 2–3 weeks.

⚠️ Common Problems

  • Bud drop: sudden temperature or light change
  • Yellow stems: overwatering
  • Wrinkled stems: underwatering

💡 Interesting fact: Unlike desert cacti, Schlumbergera truncata evolved in humid forests, which is why it prefers more moisture and shade than typical cacti.
